Kikkawa Jozo Brewery
Nestled in the foothills of the Tanzawa Oyama mountain lies the Kikkawa Jozo sake brewery, which has been operating across six generations since 1912.
The sacred mountain here has been known as Afuri-yama (‘rainfall mountain’) since ancient times, attracting worshipers to nearby Oyama Afuri Shrine, and providing an important source of clean groundwater for Kikkawa to harness in their sake production line.
Combined with carefully selected sake rice, this natural blessing of clean, fresh water has helped the brewery make their staple Kikuyu brand of sake, as well as the new AFURI brand launched in 2021. Kikkawa Jozo takes pride in their rich sake that is well-rounded yet easy-to-drink, thanks to their use of low-polished rice that is fermented slowly at low tempertures.
