161Tokyo's neighbor and Japan's second biggest city, Yokohama needs little introduction. An historical port town which played a profound role in the Meiji era, the city has an almost European atmosphere with tree-lined streets, red brick architecture and a multitude of fine dining and bistros. Yokohama also has a deep respect for art with a plethora of museums, art spaces and entertainment venues in addition to its hugely popular Yokohama Triennale.
The Yokohama Station area and nearby Sakuragicho, Kannai and Bashamichi, each with its own identity and ambience, are awash with parks such as the wonderful Minato Mirai, retail and shopping opportunities including Landmark Tower (one of the most iconic attractions in the area) as well as a host of activities for families and children.
Yokohama also plays host to the largest Chinatown in Japan which dates back approximately 160 years. With a dazzling array of restaurants and stalls selling a myriad of fantastic Chinese cuisine and snacks it's a fascinating and bustling area and worth a day trip in itself. Vibrant, noisy, with food the main focus, it's a gourmand's dream come true.
