The SAMURAI Project

You can experience Japanese culture with the theme of Samurai using special tools with special people in special locations. The programs are provided in a quiet, private environment where no tourists are allowed to enter. Experts specializing in each art teach you closely using special tools. Programs on Zen meditation, Iaido(the art of drawing a real sword) and tea ceremony, etc. are available.

Daiyūzan Saijō-ji temple

Daiyūzan Saijō-ji temple

This temple, with over 4000 different schools across Japan, is k nown as a sacred ground in the Kanto region with a history of 600 years. Rows of cedar trees that are more than 500 years old and designated as a prefectural natural monument can be found in the grounds of this famous tem ple. You can experience shojin ryori (traditional vegetable dishes for Buddhist monks) and zen meditation (reservations required).

Komyo-ji Temple (head temple of Jodo sect)

This temple was founded in 1243 by the Jodo sect's third patriarch, Nen-a Ryochu. The temple gate has been designated as a Nationally Important Cultural Property. You can enjoy a panoramic view of the town of Kamakura, Sagami Bay, Eno shima Island and Mt. Fuji from the top of the hill behind the temple. This view has been selected as one of the 50 most picturesque views in Kanagawa Prefecture. Shojin ryori (traditional vegetable dishes for Buddhist monks) of your choice can be prepared If you reserve in advance.

Yabusame (Equestrian Archery) Experience

Yabusame (Equestrian Archery) Experience

Yabusame is a traditional Japanese mounted archery. Archers on horseback galloping at top speed shoot arrows with prayers for happiness and peace. In Kamakura, you can experience a part of the Yabusame tradition. The Yabusame that you will see in Kamakura now developed into its current style about 800 years ago. Please enjoy the charm of Kamakura while experiencing the world of the Samurai through Yabusame.

Kamakura Noh Theatre

This facility was founded with the aim of promoting and popularizing the Nohgaku theatre which has been added to the UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage list. In addition to regular performances, the Noh mini museum exhibits a stage, Noh masks, Noh costumes and other items. You can participate in courses (reservations are required) and the stage can be leased as well.

Kanagawa Prefecture is promoting Magnet Culture (MAGCUL for short) with the aim of attracting people and creating a buzz in Kanaga wa around fascinating art and culture. In Yokohama in particular, there is Kanagawa Arts Theatre (KAAT) which creates and introduces performance arts such as theatre, dance and musicals , as well as nurturing talent. Enjoy the fascinating performance arts created and introduced by Kanagawa at KAAT.

You can find 25 valuable, relocated buildings here. Most of these buildings are old houses built in the Edo period and some have been designated as Nationally Important Cultural Properties. You can experience traditional indigo dyeing in the Dentou-Kougeikan, or watch traditional performance arts.

Koganeishuzou Sake Brewing

Founded 200 years ago in 1818 during the Edo period, the Sakari-masu local sake brewery is in the beautiful natural environment in Nanasawa in Atsugi City. The sake uses good quality water that streams out at the foot of the Higashi Tanzawa mountain range and carefully selected sake rice. A tour of the brewery is available (reservations are required).

Enoura Observatory

Enoura is a place where extremely rare scenery is maintained and you can actually feel the changing of the seasons. Odawara Art Foundation's spectacular Enoura Observatory stands there. The whole site was designed by a modern artist, Hiroshi Sugimoto. Only a fixed number of people can enter the facility every two hours, so a reservation is a must.

THE HAKONE OPEN-AIR MUSEUM

This is Japan's first open-air museum mainly exhibiting sculptures. It exhibits over 120 artworks by well-known modern and contemporary artists such as Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore and Taro Okamoto. In addition to the five indoor exhibitions including the Picasso Pavilion, there are interactive art works a nd an ashiyu footbath. A personal guide is available by reservation.

This is the largest museum in Hakone exhibiting around 450 piec es of art including ceramics and paintings from Japan and other countries in the East. OYAMA-AFURI JINJA Shrine

This is a shikinaisha (shrine listed in the Engishiki regulations and laws completed in early 900s) founded more than 2000 years ago. During the Edo period, it flourished as an important sacred ground and 200,000 worshippers visited annually. Recently, it was de signated as "Japan Heritage" and the view from the shrine is mentioned in the Michelin Guide. A personal guide is available by reservation.
