Ugakubunko

Shonan Area 45m

Overview

House of Yamaguchi family was registered as a National Tangible Cultural Property in 1998 (Heisei 10). It was a magistrate's office that was run by Manabe clan who was a direct retainer and close associate of a shogun in the last days of the Tokugawa Shogunate. It was also used as a venue for studying the Freedom and People's Rights Movement in early Meiji period. The second floor was converted into a room designated for a lord, therefore, it has the sukiya (tea-ceremony room) style design on partitions and doors. The innermost room of the first floor is the remains of the magistrate office where various records and documents are exhibited now. The records and documents include historical materials of the end of the Edo period that remained in the Yamaguchi family (served for Manabe clan) and materials of the Freedom and People's Rights Movement. Nearby, there is a place famous for plums in the spring and a rapeseed field and many people visit the field. *English guide is available if a reservation is made in advance.
