Hiratoshimaru

Located on Kanagawa’s Miura Peninsula, Hiratoshimaru is a seafood wholesaler renowned for its fresh shirasu, or whitebait. These tiny, juvenile fish have a mellow, ocean-like flavor and are typically served over rice. Hiratoshimaru features produce straight from the fishermen’s catch and, thus, is a must visit for fans of this Japanese seafood staple.

The shop’s rustic, no-frills interior is packed with an assortment of shirasu products, including raw-, boiled-, dried- and pickled shirasu — the latter the fishermen prepare on their boats directly after a catch! Aside from shirasu, the shop also sells dried local fish octopus, and an assortment of seaweed.

Since the produce is fresh, quantities can be limited. If you have your heart set on a certain product, be sure to call the facility beforehand to ensure that it is in stock. Stop by and pick up an authentic taste of Japan!
