Spend a Memorable Day in Miura, Kanagawa
Recommended Transit Passes
Misaki Maguro Day Trip TicketYou may have heard of Yokohama and Kamakura, but if you’ve never traveled beyond their picturesque port and seaside charm, respectively, you’re missing out on the enchanting eco-tourism spot that is Miura City, located on the coasts of Kanagawa Prefecture.
One of its many highlights is the island of Jogashima, featured in the third edition of the revised Michelin Green Guide Japan as a two-star tourist destination, but there’s so much more to Miura than its coastline views and hiking trails. Explore Miura with us as we dive into a world of freshly caught seafood, locally produced specialties, and nature-friendly activities.
Summary of Itinerary:
- Jogashima, a two-Michelin-starred destination for nature lovers with hiking trails
- Koajiro no Mori, where forests, wetlands, tidal flats and the ocean meet
- Misaki Tuna Market, filled to the brim with the latest catches and harvested produce
- Kappo Muneyoshi, showing you the true versatility of Miura’s bounty
Travel to first spot (Misakiguchi Station → Jogashima)
- Car: 14 minutes
- Bus: 28–35 minutes
Enjoy the untouched nature of Jogashima

Jogashima makes you feel like you’re at the edge of the world, looking out from its jagged edges and unique formations as the sea stretches before you. With the wind whistling through your hair and the smell of saltwater on the breeze, this is eco-friendly tourism at its finest.
Getting to this Michelin Guide-recommended spot couldn’t be easier. From Misakiguchi Station on the Keikyu Kurihama Line, board a bus heading for Jogashima (城ケ島行) and get off at Hakushuhimae after a journey of around 25 minutes. You have arrived, ready to embrace the natural beauty of the Miura Peninsula—on clear days, you can even take in the majesty of Mt. Fuji in the distance.

Escape the pressures of your everyday life with a hike along the Jogashima Island Loop, a moderately challenging loop trail that covers about 5.5 km (3.4 miles) and takes about one to two hours to complete. You’ll wander from the very edge of the Miura Peninsula to the unique horizon-interrupting architecture of Jogashima’s two lighthouses: Awasaki Lighthouse and Jogashima Lighthouse.

Travel to next spot (Jogashima → Urari Marche)
- Car: 8 minutes
- Bus: 17 minutes
- Walk: 35 minutes
If you don’t have a car, the easiest way to get from Jogashima to Urari Marche is to get the bus bound for Misakiguchi Eki from the Hakushuhi mae bus stop (where you originally got off). From there, you’ll want to exit the bus at the Misakiko stop, about 10 minutes later. Once you’ve hopped off the bus, the market’s just a few minutes away. Due to its proximity to Jogashima, it’s easy to combine a perfect day of hiking, sightseeing, and browsing Misaki’s local produce.
Support Misaki's local food culture at Urari Marche

Over at Urari Marche—also known as URARI Seafood Market—discover the region’s bounty of local seafood and produce. Caught fresh from the waters of Miura or harvested from its very soils, every purchase supports the local agriculture and fishing industry.
Behold the bounty of Miura's waters at Misaki Tuna Market

Misaki is famous for its locally caught tuna, providing a mouthwatering, meaty mouthful, delivered in a variety of unique ways. Enjoy a juicy tuna katsu skewer, buy a succulent slab of tuna for BBQ, or experience something entirely new with Misaki’s famous tuna ice cream.

Upstairs is the local produce market, revealing only the freshest fruits and vegetables, harvested from the bountiful soils of Miura and the wider Kanagawa Prefecture itself. From summer-exclusive watermelons and luscious corn on the cob to regional specialties like Yokosuka curry ramen, there’s something for everyone to try. The best part? Every purchase supports the people and economy of Miura, keeping this coastal region thriving for future generations.

Next to the vegetable supermarket is a café serving coffee, locally crafted beer, and fresh baked goods. Treat yourself to a morning coffee or grab a craft beer and relax, letting your eyes wander over the marina and the scenic Sagami Bay.

Travel to next spot (Urari Marche → Koajiro no Mori)
- Car: 12–14 minutes
- Bus: 30 minutes (includes 19 minutes of walking)
If you’re coming from north of Miura, such as Tokyo, you’ll likely come into Misakiguchi Station. From there, you can catch a bus to the Hikibashi (引橋) stop and walk 5–10 minutes to reach the park. If you’re coming from the south, after the Misaki Seafood Market, you only need to hop on a bus heading towards Misakiguchi Station, get off at Aburatsubo Iriguchi (油壷入口) and walk for 15 minutes to reach the entrance by Seabornia Marina and Shirahige Shrine.
Escape into a protected ecosystem at Koajiro no Mori

Koajiro no Mori, translating to Koajiro Forest, is one of the only natural environments in the Kanto region “where forests, wetlands, tidal flats and the sea remain in a continuous manner” (Source). This lush green space is part of Kanagawa Prefecture, Miura City, and local NPOs` efforts to protect Japan’s precious wetlands and diverse ecosystems, allowing you to stroll along the boardwalk, surrounded by nature on all sides without ever disturbing the environment. Exploration, done sustainably.

From the moment you step into the oasis of calm that Koajiro no Mori provides, you’ll be serenaded by a cacophony of birds from the branches above, including the distinctive call of the Japanese bush warbler. As you continue, the diversity of the wildlife will continue to surprise and delight, with butterflies and dragonflies chasing the breeze alongside you and praying mantises and crickets resting on leaves nearby. The area is also known for being the habitat of the rare red claw crab.

Walking from one side of the forest to the other took about an hour, with multiple clearings and viewing terraces along the way. At times, the only sign of humanity was when the trees cleared enough to reveal the Seabornia Marina beyond the wetlands in the distance, reminiscent of the nostalgic scenes of Studio Ghibli’s When Marnie Was There. Despite the summer heat, this was a refreshing detox of body and mind, soaking up the beauty of this forest.

Travel to next spot (Koajiro no Mori → Kappo Muneyoshi 割烹 宗㐂)
- Car: 8–10 minutes
- Bus: 32 minutes (includes 23 minutes of walking)
Getting to Kappo Muneyoshi from Koajiro no Mori is as easy as getting the bus back towards Jogashima (城ケ島行) from the Hikibashi stop. After about 10 minutes, get off at the Tenjincho stop, only a one-minute walk to the restaurant. If you’re coming from Misakiguchi Station, catch the bus heading towards Misaki Higashioka and get off at Tenjincho after about 15 minutes.
Coming from Jogashima after a leisurely island hike? Catch the bus at the Hakushuhimae stop and get off at Tenjincho. You could also walk for 30 minutes from Jogashima to the restaurant, if you want to enjoy a stroll through this charming coastal city.
Kappo Muneyoshi: See the diversity of Misaki’s tuna

For an experience of traditional Japanese kappo dining that you won’t soon forget, head to Kappo Muneyoshi (割烹 宗㐂). Here, Misaki’s signature tuna transforms into a variety of dishes that promise to make your journey as mouthwatering as it is memorable.

Our recommendation? The Maguro Ticket set menu, including a generous bowl of Misaki tuna, served three ways—minced, raw, and grilled—over rice, and tuna heart sashimi, best enjoyed after dunking into a salty, umami-filled sesame oil dip, or grilled in butter in the center of the table. Miura is also famous for its daikon (radish), and Muneyoshi elevates this simple dish to new heights by battering and frying it before topping the vegetable with a sweet tuna miso paste.
There were a few more dishes alongside these, from tuna soup to tuna stomach, the latter of which was grilled in butter before pairing with a thick soy sauce dip. To end the meal, Muneyoshi served its homemade tuna ice cream, a blend of 25% tuna and creamy soft serve, topped with wasabi and surrounded by cornflakes. You’ve never tried a dessert like this.
