This ancient shrine is said to have been built over 2,000 years ago. As a sacred site revered by many warlords, such as those who partook in rainmaking rituals, and pilgrimages to the shrine became very popular during the Edo period. In the 28th year of the Heisei period (2016), the pilgrimage to Mount Oyama was recognized as a piece of important Japanese heritage, and the view from Afuri Shrine became a two-star Michelin-starred site.

OYAMA-AFURI JINJA Shrine

Built more than 2,200 years ago, OHYMA-AFURIJINNJA Shrine has long been worshipped as a sacred guardian mountain in the Kanto region. The mountain worship known as “Ohyama-mairi” was recognized as a Japanese Heritage in 2016. Formal worship is conducted at Ohyama Afurijinja Shimoyashiro, which can be reached by cable-car at an altitude of 696m, while various cultural events including traditional Noh plays and jazz concerts have been staged on the Noh stage of Afurijinja Shrine offices situated among the pilgrim’s lodgings at the foot of the mountain. Various other events and outdoor gatherings are also held here.
