Kakuon-ji Temple was originally built in 1218 as Okura Yakushido, a hall dedicated to the worship of Yakushi Nyorai by Hojo Yoshitoki. 1296, Hojo Sadatoki, wishing to prevent the return of the Genko invasion, founded the temple under the name of Ritsushi Chikai Shinkei as a place to study the four religious schools of Shingon, Tendai, Zen, and Pure Land Buddhism.
