Welcoming the New Year in Kanagawa!

Welcoming the New Year in Kanagawa!

The New Year is an exciting time in Japan, filled with traditions and celebrations. One of these traditions is hatsumode (the first shrine visit of the year), and a popular hatsumode spot in Kanagawa is Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine. Located in Kamakura, this shrine has an impressively long history and is one of the region’s most important spiritual spots.

The Chinese New Year is also just around the corner, and Yokohama Chinatown is a great place to celebrate this special occasion. Stop by the area until the end of February and enjoy a picturesque illumination event — it includes one of the largest dragon lanterns in Japan!

Another Japanese tradition is hatsuhinode, or watching the first sunrise of the new year. If you want to make your first sunrise of 2021 extra special, we’ve got some great spots on our website where you can catch a glimpse of Mt. Fuji!

We hope your 2021 gets off to a great start, and we look forward to sharing more of Kanagawa’s exciting destinations with you throughout the year. Be sure to follow our social media accounts to stay updated with all of the latest events and seasonal attractions!
