Hakone Komagatake Rope-Way

Hakone Komagatake Rope-Way

Hakone

A 7-minute ropeway ride leads to the summit of Hakone Komagatake, 1327 meters above sea level. The view from the summit offers the full landscape of Hakone, centered around Ashinoko Lake, with the splendid, panoramic view from the majestic Mount Fuji to the north all the way to Suruga Bay, the Izu Peninsula, the 7 islands of Izu, the Shonan coast, and the Boso Peninsula far away. The ropeway is a popular starting point for hiking during hiking season, as there are several hiking routes from the top of the mountain towards Owakudani and Soun Mountain.

Also, Hakone Mototsumiya Shrine, known as a spiritual spot, can be accessed from here. The top of Komagatake is also known as a summer resort as the average temperature is a cool 18 degrees celcius (64 degrees fahrenheit) in the summer. In August, filipendula clustered together around the mountain-top station come into full bloom. The plant is also called the “queen of highland” and its blooms of small, pretty pink flowers decorate the hillside. In autumn, the area offers a birds-eye view of the crimson autumn leaves of Hakone. In the winter, the temperature drops and warm clothes are necessary but the reward is a great view of Mount Fuji covered with snow in the crisp and clear air. Visitors can enjoy different panoramas all year around.

Nightlife

From the top of Mt. Komagatake, the panoramic view of Hakone centers on Lake Ashinoko. And to the northwest is magnificent Mt. Fuji. In the distance, you can see from Suruga Bay to the Izu Islands, the Shonan Coast, and the Boso Peninsula.

Travel tip

At the top, prepare yourself for one of the most stunning views of Mt. Fuji you will ever see. Also great 360 degree views of Sagami Bay and the entire Hakone region. Winter can be cold, but the skies are crystal clear.
