In 1872 (Meiji 5), Kaemon Takashima's "Nippon Gasshachu" installed gas lamps on Bashamichi and Honmachi Streets, making them the first gas lamps in Japan. The pillars are said to have been imported from Glasgow, the U.K., and the lamp fixtures were manufactured by Japanese craftsmen. In 1986 (Showa 61), to celebrate the completion of the new construction of the Kannai Hall of the Yokohama Civic Cultural Center, a gas lamp modeled after the original was installed.
