Situated at the southern tip of Kanagawa Prefecture, Miura is a city centered around commercial fishing with Misaki being one of Japan's major fishing harbors with a focus on tuna. Surrounded by water (the Pacific and Sagami Bay) the region is a reminder of the importance that fish and fishing play in Japanese life and society. Miura is connected to the beautiful Jogashima (Joga Island) which is a popular and attractive destination for tourists and visitors to the area.
Miura also plays host to the Miura Marathon which is held annually in March as well as the Keikyu Aburatsubo Marine Park, Miurakaigan Beach and the Chakkirako Festival, held in January. The festival has been designated as one of Japan's important Intangible Cultural Heritage where girls from five to 12 dance while holding bamboo sticks (chakkirako) and paper fans. It's a powerful and culturally important festival which gives visitors a glimpse of the local arts and history.
